041016 S 30x24, Poppies and Hollyhocks Next to the The Creek Falls

I start the painting on a pre-tinted panel with a sketch done with a brush dipped in oil and primary red magenta, a transparent oil  paint.

I started to flesh in the shadows of the rocks and the treetops.  I usually, not always, start with the darks and work to the lights.

So I start adding middle value greens and blues and rock browns and umbers, working over the entire surface.

I paint in a warmer green in the foreground space.  Cerulean blue and Cadmium Yellow Light make a bright green and I often tone it down with a complementary red violet mixed with the Primary Red Magenta and either Cerulean Blue or Ultramarine Blue.  Cerulean Blue is used in the foreground water with CAdmium Reds added for the rocks and shadows.

I pop in the sky mixed from Cerulean Blue and Titanium White.

I start to add the trees, mixed from Cadmium Red Medium and Ultramarine Blue.  Red poppies are made with Cadmium Red Light and Medium.  Hollyhocks are made using Primary Red magenta, a touch of yellow, and white.

More detail is added and I work the entire surface going from the background to the foreground and back again.  Trees and branches are painted in, then pushed back with leaves and flowers and more branches.  I add the white ripples and falls to the creek.  Orange and yellow lilies are added.

The yellow centers are added to the poppies and big broad leaves are adding to the mid-foreground.
