Rainbows, Moonbows, and Miracles

Rainbows, Moonbows, and Miracles

Rainbows, Moonbows, and Miracles

Last week, I attended a Live Coaching Event hosted by, Dylan Frost, a young man who has sold $55 million worth of physical and digital products over the internet in the last eight years.  That alone is a mind blowing opportunity!  The event was held in Corbin, Kentucky, home of the original KFC restaurant, just a short, four hour drive from my studio in Brown County, Indiana.  So, yes!  I had to go!

His story is so amazing, it is a miracle in itself.  He grew up in the poorest county in the country in southeast Kentucky, coal mining country.  He and his partner built their business starting from scratch with nothing.  As he put it, he had no product, no email list, no assets.  A true inspiration for what we can do.  And such a humble man.  At one point he said, “I remember where I come from”.   A real, down-to-earth, grounded young man.

I’ll admit, when I hit the highway, I felt some anxiety. I won’t even bother articulating the specifics. But, I have found that often anxiety and excitement feel the same — a churning in the stomach — so I usually just tell myself that I am excited.  Nevertheless,  I did feel some fear.  So, the best way to dispel fear is to pray for someone else.  For privacy reasons, I won’t give any details, but I started praying and meditating about a very stressful situation that a friend has been dealing with for a long time.  I prayed for peace, joy, happiness, health, and prosperity for this person.

A storm blew up with black clouds and some rain.  Not too bad.  By now, I am heading south on I-75, south of Lexington.  Listening to music and visualizing the best outcome for my friend.

And then an amazing thing happened.  I saw a gorgeous rainbow that stretched from horizon to horizon.  The rainbow was actually behind me and I had to look at it in the two sideview mirrors.  But it was glorious.  So, wow, cool, that was neat.  The rainbow faded and I clipped along.

Double Rainbow
Double Rainbow

A few minutes later, another amazing thing happened,  I saw another rainbow — only this time it was a DOUBLE rainbow!  Wow, even better, more spectacular!  This time it was in front of me, to the left, so I had a great view.  And, once again it faded.  By now, I am feeling pretty fabulous and any fear I felt had been replaced with joy and hope and excitement.  I wondered if this was a good omen for my friend and for my trip, in general.

So I am driving along, feeling pretty good.  When another amazing thing happened.  I saw another rainbow!  As one faded, another appeared.  And another one, and another one, and another one.  I think I saw six rainbows but it could have been seven.  I started to lose count.  Rainbows escorted me nearly all the way to Corbin.  One after another.  I had to slow way down to, like, 65 mph, just to rubber neck for rainbows.  Luckily, they were all in front, to my left, so they were easy to spot.

Then the rainbows were replaced by a glorious sunset of majestic magentas, peaches, oranges, golds, and turquoises just as I pulled into my hotel parking lot.

Miracle Breakthrough

After checking in, I got settled in my room.  About a half hour later, out of the blue, I got a text from my friend telling me there had been a breakthrough in the difficult situation!  I couldn’t hardly believe it!  WOW!  Thank you, God!   The rainbows did, indeed, appear to portend the good news.

Believe it or not, that is not the end!

So, the next day, Friday, I met Dylan and the other attendees at the event center.  Even more folks joined us on Zoom from all over the world.  Dylan really gave us 100% of his time and attention.  What a gift!   I got an MBA in eleven hours with one of the best.  LOL.  Took 23 pages of notes.

So, at five o’clock, the owner of the 2nd and Main event center opened the bar for a cocktail hour.  Even though I don’t drink alcohol, I can still schmooze with a bottle of Perrier.

In the window of the bar room, facing Main Street, at the event center, is the name “Moonbow” painted on the glass.  Dylan asked me if I had heard about “moonbow”.  “No,” I replied.  Then he told me that a moonbow is a RAINBOW formed over a waterfall during a full moon at night!  And that one occurs regularly nearby.  Then he pointed to a small painting on the wall behind the bar of the waterfall and a rainbow!

What is happening here?!  This is crazy!

There are only two places in North America with moonbows.  One is in Yosemite but it is unpredictable and by happenchance.  There’s only one place in the Western Hemisphere where the elusive phenomenon occurs predictably and regularly: southern Kentucky’s Cumberland Falls State Park, near Corbin.  The only other place on the planet to have reliable moonbows? Victoria Falls, on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe.  Niagara Falls used to have a moonbow but all the artificial lights have made their moonbow a distance memory.

This article includes everything you need to know to visit the Moonbow at Cumberland State Park complete with calendar of dates and best viewing times.

Having never heard of a moonbow before, I looked up the word in my 1967 Random House Dictionary and there it was!  How I have missed it all these years, I’ll never know.  Now I need to plan a trip back to Corbin to visit the moonbow during a full moon.

So I am not sure exactly what is the miracle in all this but I marvel at the synchronicities of the universe and it gives me such joy and hope!  One of the attendees suggested that this event was the gold pot at the end of the rainbow and I like that idea.  So excited to see what the future holds.

Dylan treated us to lunch and dinner at restaurants a short walk down Main Street.  For lunch we went to the Wrigley Taproom and Eatery which was delicious.  I had the Harvest Buddha Bowl and it was to die for!  Super yummy.

In the evening, we dined at the eclectic, Seasons Restaurant.  Oh my gosh!  What an incredible restaurant!  Not only were the portions generous, the food was great.  And it was the wildest décor I have ever seen!   Really impossible to capture in photos.  You really have to see it in person.  Tons of antiques, silver, crystal, chandeliers, large paintings in ornate gilt frames, and a room filled with Christmas décor!  An artist’s dream.  And mixed in were tables for dining.

Luis is a doctor who has a course in managing rheumatoid arthritis with supplements instead of drugs.  Colleen has a product, Wine Bling, that she invented and patented, that are chilled “gemstones” to keep wine cool.  Dylan provided lots of insight and strategies for each of our businesses with lots of overlapping information that benefitted all of us.  He also took questions from the Zoomers.

An artist’s life is always interesting!  I never know where the journey will take me and all the wonderful people I will meet along the way.  I hope that you stay open for the magic in your life today.

Let me know about your most recent rainbow sighting or miracle.

That’s it for now!  Thanks so much for tuning in.

Happy trails and much love,

Charlene

Field Notes

I always write my field notes on the back of the painting later in the evening after I get back to the studio.

These are the notes on the back of the painting:

“Plein air, warm 75°, overcast, windy, at the back of my property, dry, drought.  Yellowwood State Forest, Nashville, Brown County, Indiana, plein air oil.”

The cold, dark days of winter are a perfect time to take a course.  So, I’ve had my nose in the books studying a business marketing course.  And there is a lot to learn!  Whew!  Once the weather warms up, I am busy with outside projects like gardening and mowing.  And this spring, as soon as I get 2-3 dry warm days, I need to clean out a shed to move and re-set up my woodshop in it.  Right now, the woodshop is in the barn but I have decided, to better accommodate my new table saw, I need to relocate the woodshop.  Pretty bad timing on my part to decide to do this just as winter was settling in.  LOL.

That’s it for now!  Thanks so much for checking in!  I really appreciate you.

Love and hugs,

Charlene

P.S.  Over the years I have had numerous requests to teach painting.  I used to teach, a long time ago, at a local art center but got too busy with touring shows.  So I am planning to set up a course to better serve you.  The course will be online so that you can attend no matter where you live!  Woo hoo!  Tentatively, I am going to start with a course on plein air painting in the forest.  Please let me know if there is anything else you would like to see me cover.  Stay tuned for details.  If you are not already a VIP, sign up to be updated.

Warm Up In Yellowwood State Forest and Saying Goodbye

Warm Up In Yellowwood State Forest and Saying Goodbye

Warm Up In Yellowwood State Forest, December 28, 2022, plein air oil painting.

R.I.P. Henry (yellow cat), 2009-2023, who joined his brother, Beau Beau (black and white cat), over the rainbow bridge.

Beau Beau and Henry

I will sure miss him.  The hardest part about having animals is saying good-bye.

Henry used to go on our three mile hike in the forest everyday, like one of the dogs.  Sometimes he would lag behind and meow loudly so I would wait up for him.  Always worried he might attract coyotes.  Well, one day, he lagged behind and I heard a terrible YEOOOWWW receding off into the distance!!!   My worst fear was that he was being dragged away by a coyote.

I ran to the location of the noise and there was no Henry.  I called and searched but he was gone.  Sitting down on the hillside, I started to cry.  After about ten minutes, I hear a timid meow.  And Henry appeared.  I was so happy to see him and swooped him up in my arms and took him home.  I didn’t find any marks on him and still have no idea what happened that day.  But, after that, he never went on our daily hike in the forest again.

Animals bring me so much joy but, in the end, they always break my heart.

So…on to painting.

Warm Up In Yellowwood State Forest

As many of you know, we got hit with a cold blast of Arctic air and a bit of snow before the Christmas holiday.  Temperatures here got a low as -5°F.  So, even though there was a beautiful coating of snow, it was too cold to go out and paint, en plein air.  My paint freezes too fast to finish a painting!  While I still go out and walk the dogs in the forest, painting just won’t work.

Luckily, the Arctic blast didn’t last long. The sun came out and temperatures warmed up to 50° F on December 28, 2022.  What a drastic change!  Felt downright balmy outside.  But I had to work quick because the snow was melting fast.  Thrilled to get the final plein air painting of 2022 done.

I just love the way the sun lights up the snow covered hills with all the rich, variety of blues in the shadows.  Periwinkle, cerulean, cobalt, turquoise, aquamarine, azure, peacock blue, sky blue, sapphire, sea blue, and lavender.  Blue is my favorite color!

Must admit, I couldn’t paint the past few days dealing with an increasingly sick cat.  I was so sad and stressed and anxious, second guessing myself, trying to make the best decisions for my boy, that I knew any painting would be imbued with that unhappy, desperate energy.  No matter how beautiful the painting may appear, it would be impressed with that energy of grief.  Since I am starting a new wedding painting, that just would not do.

A wedding painting should embody joy and happiness and love.  However, within the sadness, there was definitely love.  But it is the love of saying goodbye, not the love of a new beginning, but rather an ending.  So, I will give myself a bit of time before I dive into the wedding painting.

Update:  Several days have passed now since Henry crossed the rainbow bridge and I still think I see him out of the corner of my eye or hear him meow or brush up against my leg.  I had a couple dreams that were so real I could feel his fur.  One, I saw his paw prints in a light dusting of snow on the deck so I went inside to get my camera to document the proof that he was there.  But when I came back outside, the paw prints were gone.  Sometimes my animals that have crossed over have come to me in dreams and it can be so real.  I can pet them and feel their fur and talk to them.  I am sure they are there with me.  But then I wake up and they are gone.  Maybe in another dimension, they are still there with me.

That’s all for now.  Thanks for tuning in.

With all my love…Happy Trails,

Charlene

Magical Valley, Part 3

Magical Valley, Part 3

Commissioned oil painting

Dear Valued Friend,

Happy New Year!
So grateful for you and for another wonderful year creating beautiful artwork!  May 2023 bring you and your loved ones peace, joy, happiness, health, prosperity, and many blessings!   Fill your imagination with the world you want to live in and envision the future you want to step into.

And with that, let’s step into a beautiful, magical world in this painting.

Magical Valley, Part 3

Today, we take up where we left off last time on the commissioned oil painting and finish it up.  You can check out Magical Valley, Part 1, and Magical Valley, Part 2, to see how we got to this point.

I have also uploaded a short, time lapse video that shows the creation of the painting from start to finish.  Lots of details are included at the end of the blog so you can really see the painting, up close.

Video

Sky

I was just starting to paint in the sky.

Commissioned oil painting
Just starting the sky.

The sky is blocked into the negative space in and around the trees.  Lighter trees are painted in the background to give the illusion of distance.  I love to leave glimmers of red that sparkle and vibrate against the green that make the painting come alive.

Commissioned oil painting
All blocked in.

Finally, I start adding the vertical trees which helps give dimension to the painting.

Commissioned oil painting
Adding flowers and trees.

Here’s where I start painting in the flowers.  The flowers on the distant hill are a bit duller, smaller, and less detail.

Commissioned oil painting
More flowers, trees, and leaves.

More red poppies are painted and tiny center yellow details added to the ones in the foreground.  I paint in more leaves, covering some of the poppies and then pulling the flowers back out on top.  This helps give the illusion of depth and movement.  More vertical foxgloves are added.

Commissioned oil painting
Almost done.

I keep working up deeper and deeper layers of paint until I am satisfied.  Usually at this point, I am having so much fun seeing it all come together, I don’t want to stop painting.  Great restraint is needed to STOP before I go too far.
