083116 S 6x8 Glass Sculpture in the Magic Lilies

This little painting was inspired by my Magic Lilies with a glass sculpture set in their midst.  I make the glass sculptures out of recycled vases.  This sculpture has a beautiful solid black, opaque glass piece in it with a round topper that is quite striking, over all.

080916 12x12 Deep End of the Pool

This is another plein air from the Brown County State Park as part of the Art in the Park Project Grant I received from the Indiana Arts Commission and the Department of Natural Resources. 

I set up in one spot at the pool but ended up moving to another spot.  People constantly on the move can make it difficult to compose a painting!

I settled on a location on the right side of the deep end with the diving boards.

I start the painting by blocking in the deep rich blue of the pool.

I add the background and start popping in the swimmers, one gesture at a time!

These young ladies were two pairs of sisters in the park on a camping trip, enjoying the final days of summer before returning to school.  They saw me starting to pack up my painting and came over to see the final result.

080816 12x12 Swimmers

I started to set up next to the baby pool but just as I was getting ready to start painting, they all got up and left!

So I turned my attention to the Olympic size pool.  You can see it wasn't super busy!

Even so, some young swimmers stopped to check the progress of the painting.

Luckily, this bather/model seemed content to hang out at the edge of the pool for a long while watching her kids.

Here's some more swimmers who stopped to check out the painting.

The lifeguards blew the whistle for the break and emptied out the pool.  Luckily, I was just putting the finishing touches on the painting.

These kids from Bloomington were taking a swim lesson from their coach before the lifeguards cleared the pool.  They stopped by to check out the painting on their way out.  Their mom is the figure on the left in the painting.  She was on the move keeping track of her kids!

Here they pose for a picture before heading home.

062716 12x16 Changing of the Guard

This is another painting I did as part of the Arts in the Park Project Grant I received to paint in the Brown County State Park.  The lifeguards were switching out, hence the title.  Other swimmers and bathers were painted in as they walked by.  Everyone was moving!  I love painting all the action!

070516 S 24x36 Flower Garden at Dusk

Here is how I painted this lovely scene of garden flowers at twilight.

I created an "inspiration board" (can be seen on the right in the picture below) made up with several printouts of past paintings including plein air paintings. I can pick and choose the various elements that I like to include in the new painting.

I sketch out the basic design of the painting using a brush dipped in linseed oil and picking up a little pigment.

I start by blocking in the dark greens mixing them with ultramarine blue, cadmium yellow light and a touch of magenta to create a black green.  I work over the entire surface popping in the dark value for the background trees and along the creek bed.

I mix up a brighter green using cerulean blue, a warmer blue than ultramarine, and cadmium yellow light.  To tone down to bright green, I add a touch of cadmium red light or medium or magenta.  Violets are also used to tone down the bright greens.  I mixed up a light pink for the Magic Lilies from the magenta and Titanium White.

 I add gold, yellows, and oranges for various flowers.

After most of the surface of the painting is covered, I mix the sky color with Titanium White and Cerulean Blue.  Starting at the top of the panel I put in the blue sky.  I mix the twilight colors with white, cadmium red light and yellow to make a peachy sunset color.  For the transition between the blue sky at the top to the peachy dusk color at the horizon line, I mix the two colors that create a gorgeous neutral color that makes the colors glow.

Using a curricular motion with the palette knife, I start popping in the hollyhocks and poppies. 

I use a different motion with the palette knife to paint in the tops of the hollyhocks.

More detail is added throughout the painting.  Fish and ripples are added to the creek.

I decided to add some hollyhocks to the mound of earth between the two sides of the creek.  I continued  adding details throughout the painting until it felt like it was done.
